Understanding the Shared Platform Model

MakeWay recognizes that effective solutions to complex problems are often found at the grassroots level—which often lacks appropriate supports.

MakeWay introduced the shared platform model in Canada to provide the financial, human resources, risk management, and governance supports necessary to power environmental and social projects across the country. By centralizing these key operational supports and expertise, MakeWay can bring passionate  people together—all working on important challenges facing Canadians—to achieve greater impact.

While each Project has its own brand and operates independently of other Projects on the shared platform, all Projects are part of MakeWay. Imagine that each Project is a division or department within the organization.

To learn more about MakeWay’s shared platform model, refer to the article "The Charitable Society: Charitable Venture Organizations: A New Infrastructure Model for Canadian Registered Charities" published in the spring 2010 issue of The Philanthropist and written by David Stevens and Margaret Mason, two leading charity law practitioners.
