What is the best file format for logos?

JPG and PNG files are best for on-screen viewing and EPS files are best for printing.

JPG
  • Used primarily used for on-screen (especially website) materials.
  • Can be used in Microsoft Office materials, including PowerPoint presentations, but they only look good on a white background (because they have a white background).
  • Might not look good if you change their size (particularly if you make them bigger).
  • Generally have the smallest file size.
PNG
  • Used primarily for on-screen (especially website) materials.
  • Can be used in Microsoft Office materials, including Power Point presentations, and they look good on any background (because they have a transparent background).
  • Might not look good if you change their size (particularly if you make them bigger).
EPS
  • Used primarily for printed materials.
  • Colour will print accurately because the colour information is included in the file.
  • Best file format to send to anyone requesting your logo because they are "scalable", i.e. they look perfect no matter how big, or how small, they are made.
  • Can be converted to JPG or PNG for on-screen materials.
  • Can be used in most software programs.

EPS files can be used in Microsoft Office materials by clicking Insert > Picture > From File. The image will look jagged on screen, but it will print perfectly.
