Making Grants

Step 1: Determine if a grant is appropriate

As a charitable initiative, Projects are legally entitled to give out grants in accordance with Canadian charitable regulations. Projects may make grants to both registered qualified donees and to non-qualified donees in Canada.

Qualified Donees - Before initiating a grant, verify that the grantee is a qualified donee:

Projects can also make grants to non-qualified donees (NQD) that are incorporated non-profits or hereditary Indigenous governments. The NQD granting process is more complex and requires more oversight; contact [email protected] for guidance.

Projects should consult with their Project Specialist to determine the circumstances under which granting out is appropriate.

Step 2: Submit the recommendation form

When the Project is ready to give out a grant to a qualified donee, the Project Director must submit the required Grant Recommendation Form. The following information is required:

  • Your Project’s name
  • The Child Fund from which the grant will be paid (must contain sufficient funds to cover the grant)
  • Grant amount
  • Name and charitable number (if any) of the grantee
  • Grantee contact name & contact info
  • Location of the work
  • Purpose of the grant
  • Payment method

The form also contains fields for any optional information, such as Award Code(s), reporting requirements, installments etc.

The form must be signed by the Project Director and the Project Specialist, who will submit it to the Grants Administrator for processing.

Step 3: The grant is issued

MakeWay processes grants every other Monday (calendar of Current Grant Cycle Dates).
