Evaluating Employee Performance

MakeWay recommends that Projects undertake regular performance reviews with their employees. Most Projects choose to evaluate employees at the end of the probation and orientation period (typically 3 months), and annually after that.

To assist with employee reviews, MakeWay has a Performance Feedback and Goal Setting template for Project use. Contact Human Resources for information on best practices and to arrange for support with the review process.

Note: Formal performance reviews are not a substitute for consistent communication with employees, including providing regular feedback on work assignments and expectations. A good rule of thumb is that there should be no surprises at a formal performance review. Instead, the performance review should be a summary of all previous communications, with updated goals and improvement plans for the coming review period.

Performance reviews must be signed by both the Project Director and employee and forwarded to Human Resources so they can be filed in the employee’s personnel file. A completed performance review must accompany any merit-based salary adjustment request.

At the 3 month probation period, an employee may become eligible for benefits. If this is the case, inform Human Resources that the employee has passed their probation period. At this point, Human Resources will submit the necessary paperwork for benefits to start.
